STATE STUDIO • HYPERTOPIA

As part of STATE Studio Berlin‘s exhibition HYPERTOPIA, I was asked to create a spoken word piece. Inspired by the video work we are opposite like that by writer, poet and internationally exhibited artist Himali Singh Soin, I voiced questions of self- & humanhood, roots, borders, binaries, deep time and the power of storytelling.

HYPERTOPIA EXHIBITION

23 October – 6 December 2020 I 52° 29′ 24.482″ N  13° 21′ 34.603″ E 

Now that we’re here, where are we? Still on the same planet, for sure. But forces are shifting. How did we get here? What stance should we take? What actions? And where are we heading?

“Hypertopia bridges between today and tomorrow. Powered by the vision of a collective change in consciousness, the interdisciplinary program and exhibition anticipates a post-crisis future to explore approaches for a meaningful present. With a selection of artistic positions, propositions and exploratory projects that incorporate scientific methods as well as speculative modes of thought, Hypertopia challenges hierarchies, probes ideas, and imagines scenarios for a new planetary optimism.”

It is right where we are, in a state of suspense: a transit zone, a time-warp, a thinking space, a borderless territory of transdisciplinary inquiry into planetary futures, new forms of interspecies coexistence, and conscious collectiveness.”

FIELD EXPLORATIONS

When was the last time you saw the city as a playground to be be explored?

Hypertopia is a borderless territory. Hence, the exhibition was accompanied by a decentralized framework program. Self-guided Field Explorations took the exhibition from the gallery space into open terrain. Starting from the exhibited artworks, visitors were given basic instructions and sent out onto Berlin’s streets to gather clues for fresh momentum.

STATE Studio’s Hypertopia has closed, but the strings of narrative curated within and beyond the exhibition continue to unfurl. The exhibition as well as the accompanying Field Explorations are still accessible online: HYPERTOPIA online exhibition.

ONHERROEPING, ONTLUISTERING, VERLICHTING

Mirthe managed to put the relationship between our music and message into words. Her interpretation of my concept ultimately turned into a beautiful and, above all, powerful story. It proved to be both successful and sustainable.

Mag ik iets met je delen? Een verhaal, dat begint aan de oever van de Rubicon. Julius Caesar tuurt naar de overkant, waar verscholen achter het riet de belofte ligt van Rome. ‘Zal ik het doen? Waag ik de oversteek?’ Een trillende zon en Caesars vingers die tikken op de greep van zijn zwaard… ‘Wie niet waagt wie niet wint. Ik doe het!’ Spanning smelt in trotse moed en trompetgeschal verzadigt de heldere hemel met aanstaande triomf. Oversteken – geen weg terug. Maar wat, Julius, als je twijfelt? Wat als je luistert naar het fluisteren van de stemmen die werden overschreeuwd door je wrede trompetgeschal? Wat, als je omkijkt? Een zegetocht kent ook verliezers.

Beirut, Libanon, 1975 tot 1990. Een meedogenloze burgeroorlog dwingt één miljoen mensen tot vluchten. Duizenden sterven. Vandaag zegt de vluchteling: ‘weet je nog, van thuis? En van de kamer en de stoel waarin ik altijd zat?’ Vandaag resten enkel gaten in de muren. Heuvels met karkassen die ooit huizen waren. Levens die nu elders zijn. Waarom is er gevochten? Omdat iedereen gelijk had. En wat werd er gewonnen? Zijn we niet blind geweest, in onze zucht naar triomf en het eeuwige nastreven van ons gelijk, bloedrode draad van de geschiedenis?

Verstreken tijd is onherroepelijk – maar kijk op. Niets is voor altijd. Ken je het verhaal van Tobit, vader van Tobias, wiens blindheid werd genezen? Genezen omdat Tobit oog had voor een ander. Hij deelde alles wat hij kon geven, zoals wij vandaag ook alles zullen geven. Luister, geachte jury, geacht publiek. Luister met je hart en zonder oordeel. Luister, vandaag en altijd, naar onbekende melodieën, naar andere klanken, naar de ontmoeting van stemmen die samen moedig nieuw geluid weven. Luister en stel jezelf de vraag: zijn wij, vandaag, hier, niet blind, het spoor bijster, als we muziek uitdrukken in winnaars en verliezers? Wij zijn hier, niet om te winnen, maar om te delen. Luister maar.
